The project will be implemented over the next two years. Besides Rimisp – Latin American Center for Rural Development, project partners include Michigan State University (USA); the South Asia Office of the International Food Policy Research Institute; and the Tegemeo Institute of Agricultural Policy and Development, Egerton University (Kenya). Rimisp has been selected as the lead grantee and will be responsible for the overall coordination of this initiative.
The Project -funded by Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation– seeks to better understand the relationship between increasing market participation of small-scale producers, the role of micro, small and medium agrifood enterprise, and its impact on the process of inclusive agricultural transformation. It is expected that the project’s results will inform the design of more impactful investments and policies.
A project priority is exploring the interactions between small-scale producers and micro, small and medium enterprises that operate in the midstream of value chains (input supply, machinery services, transport, logistics, processing and wholesaling). In a small exploratory study conducted in 2023, it was found that there may be a symbiosis between these two actors, that influences the process of commercialization of small-scale agriculture, as well as the inclusiveness of that dynamic.
This project represents an important milestone for Rimisp as it will enable us to partner with other leading research organizations, to better understand the factors that are behind the commercialization of small-scale agriculture, the development of agrifood value chains, and the contribution of all that to inclusive agricultural transformation processes. This is the first project that Rimisp – Latin American Center for Rural Development will implement with the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.
