Rimisp shares with gubernatorial candidates and territorial actors the “Input for new governments and development plans in Colombia”.
A new Election Day is approaching in Colombia, the regional elections, where territorial authorities will be elected in all cities, municipalities and departments of the country, which will take place on October 29, 2023.
Months away from the electoral exercise where all Colombians will participate, Rimisp – Latin American center for rural development, intends to add with its experience in territorial development and with its project Siembra Desarrollo – Smallholder Agriculture and Food Resilient to Covid-19After three years of implementation, Rimisp will share an input to governors, actors and leaders of the departments of Colombia, where specific and strategic recommendations based on evidence are proposed, to support new governments and future development plans, in order to fight hunger in the territories.
This research, which took place in 10 territories in 5 countries in the region, including Colombia in the departments of Huila and Nariño, identified 3 lines of territorial intervention (access to food and income generation, food availability and agricultural productivity, governance and inter-institutional coordination) based on participatory fieldwork, interviews and focus groups with producers and other actors in the food system, in addition to a cycle of rural dialogue groups where priority was given to household food resilience, agricultural production and the importance of well-articulated governance.
As a conclusion of this research work, it can be deduced that the COVID-19 pandemic has had a considerable impact on the food environment, in the same way as other crises presented at the global level (conflicts, rising costs, increase in food prices, etc.). These crises and other socio-cultural factors have resulted in the loss of jobs and a decrease in income for many people, which has increased the economic vulnerability of the population and has limited their ability to ensure adequate and healthy food.
Given this context, where the population has seen its economic resources diminished and food prices have increased significantly, it is essential to closely monitor the prevalence of food insecurity in the different departments of the country, so Rimisp, aware of the importance of articulation for development, shares with actors, candidates and anyone who wants to be part of this debate, the input “Overcoming Hunger from the Territories: Input for new governments and development plans in Colombia“.
