📝 Presential Workshop: Latin American rurality in an uncertain world: Territorial responses to global challenges.

📅 Date: November 15, 16 and 17, 2022
📍 Venue: Stanza Hotel. Mexico City

According to information issued by various international organizations, the countries of Latin America and the Caribbean face a very complex economic and social panorama in 2022. Structural problems of economic growth intersect with inflationary pressures, shocks generated by the pandemic and growing social demands. At the same time, the war between Russia and Ukraine has affected food availability, rising energy costs and agricultural inputs.

In this scenario, it is important to discuss strategies for a sustainable and inclusive recovery that incorporates the needs of Latin American rurality. The territorial approach that Rimisp has sustained throughout its trajectory can be useful in providing solutions to these challenges. However, there is a need to reflect on how, from a territorial perspective, in the context of a global and interconnected crisis, issues such as the food and environmental crisis, social protests and new expectations of people’s wellbeing that go beyond the boundaries of rurality can be addressed.

In the last 3 years, Rimisp has followed the regional contingency on the ground through different projects that operate in the regional rurality; in Chile, Peru, Bolivia, Ecuador, Colombia, El Salvador, Guatemala and Mexico. For this reason, we believe it is important to convene different social actors that have participated in these processes to reflect on the experiences associated with rural territories, in order to think, from the territories, how to deploy solutions for a world in full transformation and with an uncertain destiny.

The meeting will bring together attendees from Peru, Mexico, El Salvador, Chile, Bolivia and Guatemala, who will address topics such as:

  • Rurality in a process of historical acceleration. Challenges from a territorial perspective.
  • Social participation to build processes of change. Advocacy strategies.
  • Projections of research lines and challenges for new projects.
  • Regional perspective on food security: public policies at the regional and country levels.
  • New expectations and narratives of well-being.
  • Regional perspective on food security: public policies at the regional and country levels.
  • Measuring in complex contexts. Methodological advances and challenges.
  • Food security in perspective: voices from the territories.
  • Socio-territorial conflicts.
  • Local food systems immersed in a global world.
