The call for entries for the Manuel Chiriboga Award D. thesis projects in any discipline of the social sciences, on topics associated with the transformations of rural societies in Latin America. Those interested may apply until October 31.
This new edition of the biannual award is an initiative of Rimisp – Latin American Center for Rural Development, with the aim of honoring the renowned Ecuadorian sociologist for his valuable contributions to the knowledge and transformation of rurality in the continent.
The competition is aimed at students in doctoral programs offered by any university officially recognized by an official entity of the respective country. To compete, they must present a doctoral thesis project that has been approved by their university and is in the initial stage of development.
The competition will accept doctoral thesis projects that have been approved for preparation between August 2021 and August 2023, and that, from the social sciences, are related to issues related to productive, social or institutional changes in rural societies in the region.
Projects may be written in Spanish, Portuguese, English or French and must be framed within lines of research related to the following areas of research Territories and Inclusion, Sustainable Agrifood Systems and Socio-territorial Conflicts.
The jury will be made up of experts in rural and territorial development in Latin America, who will select the winning project before December 22, 2023. This edition of the Manuel Chiriboga Award will award the first place winner with a monetary recognition of $3,500 (three thousand five hundred) US dollars; academic support for the development of the thesis and its electronic publication.
This call will also award an honorable mention to a doctoral thesis project related to the topic of Climate Change, which will receive academic support for its preparation and the respective electronic publication.

Who was Manuel Chiriboga?
Manuel Chiriboga Vega was a prominent Ecuadorian sociologist, trained at the Catholic University of Louvain, Belgium, and a specialist in rural development in Latin America. He was Vice Minister of Agriculture, head of Ecuador’s negotiating team for the Free Trade Agreement with the United States; executive secretary of the Latin American Association of Promotion Organizations (ALOP); director of the rural development program of the Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA); coordinator of the working group on agrarian issues of the Latin American Council of Social Sciences (CLACSO); and creator and first Secretary of the National Secretariat for Integral Rural Development.
As a teacher, he was professor and researcher in economic and social history and rural studies at FLACSO, Ecuador; at the Diplomatic Academy of his country; at the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Ecuador; at the Universidad Andina Simón Bolívar, and at the University of Wisconsin, Madison. He was an obligatory point of reference for the World Bank, IDB, IFAD, FAO and IICA.
Principal Investigator, Director-founder of Rimisp’s Ecuador office, but above all a passionate rurality advoc ate, his central concern was the inclusive modernization of the countryside and rural societies, as well as the organization and expression of civil society.
With this award Rimisp recognizes Manuel Chiriboga’s contributions to its own development as an organization committed to promoting institutional, economic and social changes to make Latin America a prosperous, just and sustainable region.
