From Rimisp – Latin American Center for Rural Development, we denounce the anti-democratic acts that are taking place in Nicaragua and accompany our colleague Ligia Gómez, associate researcher of our organization and former manager of Economic Research of the Nicaraguan Central Bank.
Ligia, along with 94 opponents, was recently charged with treason. As a result, she has been declared a fugitive from justice and has been stripped of all her assets and her Nicaraguan nationality. This situation, in addition to lacking transparency and rationality, directly violates point 2 of Article 15 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, which states that “No one shall be arbitrarily deprived of his nationality”.
These 94 people join a list of 222 people released from prison and banished just a few days ago. We also accompany the people who have been detained and who have lost their lives in this process and do not appear on any list.
Likewise, through Ligia Gómez, we show our support to all researchers who have had to leave Nicaragua or stop doing research because they are dissidents or critics. To restrict the exercise of free thought is a setback to any democratic development project.
