21/12/2022

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) announced the winning posters of the contest “Exhibition of experiences and knowledge of family farming”, which were exhibited during the Latin American and Caribbean Meeting of the United Nations Decade for Family Farming.

The objective of the contest was to make visible and disseminate the valuable and diverse knowledge present in the region in the field of family farming. Rimisp applied with a poster on the research and advocacy project called Siembra Desarrollo. COVID-19 Resilient Smallholder Agriculture and Food. The initiative, funded by Canada’s International Development Research Centre (IDRC), focuses on the agrifood systems of Mexico, Guatemala, Colombia, Ecuador and Chile, to understand how the coronavirus has affected family farming and food security in urban-rural territories in Latin America and to move towards more sustainable, inclusive and resilient agrifood systems.

Those selected represent more than 15 territories in Latin America, spread over 6 countries, plus 1 sub-region, and the proposals came from family farmers’ organizations, government entities, universities, research centers, regional integration organizations and foundations. All the experiences were evaluated according to their innovative and transformative potential, and 15 posters were selected to be part of the exhibition at the meeting.

The United Nations Decade for Family Farming 2019-2028 (UNDAF) aims to provide a new look at what it means to be a family farmer and highlight their role in eradicating hunger and shaping our food future. The regional meeting served to stimulate a joint reflection on how to enhance the role of family farming towards sustainable, inclusive and resilient agrifood systems, facing current and future crises through a transformative recovery.
