Rurality in the Constituent Process in Chile

05/10/2022

The objective of the project was to articulate, systematize and influence Chile’s constituent process by making the voices of rural communities visible so that they could be heard. This was done through debate, with emphasis on water and food security.

The initiative funded by Avina Foundation was aimed at:

  • To make visible and promote the incorporation of a rurality, water and food security agenda into the agenda of the constitutional debate.
  • Strengthen the role of organized rural voices in at least two regions of the country, O’Higgins and Los Lagos, in relation to the issues of the right to water and food security.
  • Expand the capacity for agency and advocacy of rural stakeholders through the strengthening of networks and linkages with the constituent debate.
  • Increase the involvement of the rural world in the country’s electoral and political decisions.

Rimisp proposed the following decalogue for a Constitution with a rural territorial development approach:

#RuralVoices in the Constitution

During the months of March and April 2022, we held 10 constituent town meetings – in 9 rural communes and 6 regions of Chile – so that the #VocesRurales would be part of the constituent process for a new Constitution.

Get to know the testimonies of the #VocesRurales in the constituent process:

As a result, a series of documents, reports and proposals were obtained that sought to be a contribution to a process of national relevance, in which the #VocesRurales could also be part of.
