More than 30 participants from 8 countries of the continent gathered in Mexico City to participate in the workshop “Latin American rurality in an uncertain world: territorial responses to global challenges”, organized by Rimisp – Latin American Center for Rural Development.
Structural problems of economic growth, inflationary pressures, the pandemic, growing social demands and the war between Russia and Ukraine have affected rural Latin America in recent years.
Rimisp has followed the regional contingency on the ground through different projects operating in rural Latin America; in Chile, Peru, Bolivia, Ecuador, Colombia, El Salvador, Guatemala and Mexico.
The workshop “Latin American rurality in an uncertain world: territorial responses to global challenges”, held in Mexico City on November 15-17, allowed Rimisp to convene its network of partners to reflect, from rural territories, on how to deploy solutions for a world in full transformation and with an uncertain destiny.
The event was attended by Rimisp’s partner organizations: Centro de Estudios para el Desarrollo Rural – Promoción y Desarrollo Social A.C. (Cesder) and Universidad Iberoamericana from Mexico; Sank from Guatemala; Prisma from El Salvador, Universidad Javeriana, Cali from Colombia; Prosuco from Bolivia and Cedepas from Peru. They were joined by the Rimisp team, led by Carol Chehab, director of Rimisp in Ecuador; Rodrigo Yáñez, director of Rimisp in Chile and Carlos Córdoba, director of Rimisp in Colombia. Sandra Gagnon, Senior Program Specialist from IDRC, Canada, also participated in the workshop.
The workshop was divided into 7 panels that addressed different topics of importance for understanding Latin American rurality:
THE WORKSHOP IN THE VOICE OF THE COUNTRY OFFICE DIRECTORS
Rodrigo Yáñez, Director of Rimisp in Chile:
“The objective of the workshop was to reactivate the Rimisp network in a face-to-face manner and to put into dialogue different projects that we have been executing: The project “Territorios en Diálogo” that worked on issues of agriculture, youth and socio-territorial conflicts; the project “Siembra Desarrollo” that has worked on issues such as food security; and we are also launching the project “Redes para la Transformación Agroalimentaria” that works on issues of innovation and governance in food systems with indigenous population.”
Carol Chehab, Director of Rimisp in Ecuador:
“It is essential to know what is being done in other parts of Latin America. Through these types of workshops we can look for new elements for projects needed in our territories. So, combining the different realities that are similar in most Latin American territories allows us to open our thinking to generate projects that generate changes in the territories we work in”.
Carlos Cordoba, Director of Rimisp in Colombia:
“It has been an extraordinary meeting. We have been able to learn in detail about some of the experiences, many of them taken from research to work with communities and advocacy. We realize that there is a great dynamic in these issues in Latin America and that we have a great challenge as Rimisp to continue to deepen these lines of work on food security, on the issue of youth and rural women, on the daily mentions that people have of their development and wellbeing. There are many elements that have emerged and that enrich us and challenge us as Latin American Center for Rural Development in the next steps both in research and in public policy advocacy”.
