Ecuador: small farmers visit sustainable production
In previous weeks, the producers had made two field trips to rice and corn demonstration plots to test organic farming methods. All these activities are part of the advocacy component of Siembra Desarrollo.
A third visit to learn about sustainable production processes was made by a group of small producers from the Ecuadorian provinces of Guayas and Los Ríos to cocoa plantations belonging to members of the Unión de Organizaciones Campesinas Cacaoteras (Unocace), within the framework of the project “Cocoa Production in Ecuador”. Sowing development. Smallholder agriculture and food resilient to COVID-19. , implemented by Rimisp in Colombia, Chile, Ecuador, Guatemala and Mexico, with the support of the International Development Research Centre (IDRC).
During the day, the group observed an orderly system with several species, such as fine aroma cocoa, fruit and timber trees. They also assessed the levels of productivity and profitability under an organic approach in agroforestry systems.
The activity began with a visit to the farm of Leoncio Martinez, in the Yaguachi canton, which has had an organic production system in place for six years. Later, the group went to the Michelita plot, owned by Pilar Cantos, in the Milagro canton. There, 15 varieties were verified, which have been established for two years.
During the tours, they were able to see the production process of cocoa transformation, from fermentation, drying, storage and export of the beans.
During the afternoon, a dialogue was held with a group of cocoa producers on the economic and food security situation of family farming in the post-Covid-19 context. Participants shared their testimonies on the different impacts of the pandemic and the ways in which they have dealt with them, as well as their future prospects.
