Abstract:
This report compiles the findings of a research project entitled “Tracking Small-scale Commercial Producers for Inclusive Agricultural Transformation” (INCATA), which studied the relationships between small-scale commercial producers (farmers) and micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) in vegetable value chains in Odisha, India. The objective was to understand whether and how these relationships could contribute to inclusive agricultural transformation. The research effort included rapid reconnaissance visits to 19 districts in the state, secondary data analysis and qualitative case studies, culminating in a survey of 5,640 value chain actors (farmers, input suppliers, wholesalers, commission agents and retailers). In addition, as part of a census exercise, we documented the profile of 11,800 traders in 158 vegetable markets and 35,913 households in vegetable-producing villages in 24 blocks and 6 districts. This report consists of six separate chapters, each focusing on a specific research question and prepared by different teams, with the first chapter introducing the study and its methods.
