In addition, during the event, Rimisp researchers Constanza Christian and Patricio Nayan gave the presentation: ”El desarrollo territorial rural (DTR): Directa relación con el mundo apícola y sus operaciones, necesidades y desafíos” (Rural territorial development (DTR): Direct relation with the beekeeping world and its operations, needs and challenges)”.
“Sustainable beekeeping, from the south of the world” is the slogan of the Apimondia Chile 2023 Congress, which brought together more than 100 countries linked to the beekeeping sector, from the academic world to the productive sector. The beekeepers who took part in this important global event were able to tour the beekeeping exhibition, attend various talks and network with beekeepers from all over the world.
The delegation was composed of 27 beekeepers representing the communes of the Llanquihue and Palena provinces, plus 3 beekeeping technicians from the Los Lagos region who attended the world event thanks to the financing of their tickets, transportation and accommodation during the 5 days of the congress.
Regarding the visit of the program participants, Patricio Vallespín, Governor of the Los Lagos Region, said that ”there are almost 300 beneficiaries of this program both in the province of Llanquihue and Palena and 27 of them, 14 men and 13 women, because we are putting the gender dimension in this program, are at the 48th World Beekeeping Congress that is being held in Santiago. These 27 producers are there learning about the new advances, knowing that there are spaces to grow by offering their products, showing the quality of what we are doing, so I am very happy that this program is being done with direct work in the field.”
We congratulate those who dared to be there because it means that we are putting into practice the design we had, that here the local economic development of the Regional Government can play a role that it had never played before, because there had never been a program to support small farmers in the region”, concluded the Governor.
The event was also attended by Regional Councilors from the Los Lagos region, who shared with the beekeepers of the beekeeping recovery program during Apimondia 2023 and received their comments and impressions of what it has been like to participate in the event.
Cesar Negrón, Regional Councilor and president of the Llanquihue Provincial Commission, expressed his happiness for the beekeepers of the Los Lagos Region: ”For us it has been super important the issue of reviving and enhancing the beekeeping industry in the region, we believe it is a very important industry and there is much to learn, much to work and we felt that they were not being so visible, so from the Regional Government we decided to invest here, and the facts have shown us that we were not wrong and hopefully in the future we can renew these programs, perhaps adding more things to them” and added ”I leave very happy, I am left with what they have told us that they are happy because they have been able to exchange experiences, they have been able to learn about new technologies”.
The event was also attended by Regional Councilor Roberto Soto, who highlighted the importance of supporting local entrepreneurs in the region and how the program allows to add value to the products of beekeepers. This world meeting of beekeepers in Santiago, where more than 5,000 are gathered worldwide and there are more than 100 countries that come together to talk about the concept of beekeeping, has been a tremendous experience. I am extremely happy with what we have heard from the beekeepers in the program, for giving them this experience, the possibility of being able to generate networks within them and to help develop their products, which have an added value, especially from such a beautiful place as the Los Lagos region, in Chilean Patagonia”, concluded Soto.
The experience of beekeepers
Gabriela López, from the province of Llanquihue, is the founder of Mieles Patagónicas in Puerto Varas, in the rural sector of Rio Pescado. She currently works in beekeeping and with mobile observation hives for local children and is one of the beneficiaries of the program.
After her visit to Apimondia Chile 2023, she said ”this is an opportunity that we will never experience again in history, I leave loaded with knowledge, learning, new ideas that I already want to apply. I have even made an alliance with a person who is in charge of a club in Argentina of rural schools in Mendoza, so hopefully I can have fruits from all this, which is wonderful”.
Another beneficiary of the program, Hector Correa from the province of Palena, who has been engaged in honey production with his family for 13 years, commented: “I have been in a very informal way, with a very simple enterprise and now we want to formalize, but all this paperwork, this whole process has a high cost in money, so this type of financing is fantastic for us because it helps us to cushion those expenses”.
I am happy to have been able to participate in this event, I think it will be the only time in my life that I can be in something like this. It has been very useful for me, because I have been able to learn about different areas of beekeeping. At the fair you can see all the machines, all the types of products that exist. Besides the academic part, where you can see where the studies are going, how they are advancing in medicine” says Hector about his visit to Apimondia Chile 2023.
Finally, Patricio Nayan, Rimisp researcher, said about the participation of beekeepers that “this instance is part of the training that both programs will deliver, which are world class, exposing the latest technological advances, innovations and studies in the beekeeping field. It has been a unique opportunity for the beekeepers, which we hope can be replicated and/or generate new ideas regarding technical aspects, value addition and the management of bees and bee products”.
The program “Recovery and economic reactivation of the beekeeping industry for producers in the province of Palena and Llanquihue” seeks to identify new business models and opportunities to generate value for products obtained from honey production, through the implementation of marketing strategies and tools and promotion of products and services generated in the value chain of the product, allowing consumers in the provincial, regional and national markets to learn about the properties, uses and benefits of the provincial production, positioning the product with a unique and differentiated value from national honey production.
Rimisp researchers presented at Apimondia 2023
Rural territorial development (RTD): Direct relation with the beekeeping world and its operations, needs and challenges”, is the title of the presentation given by Constanza Christian and Patricio Nayan, both Rimisp researchers.
During the presentation, the researchers discussed how rural territorial development seeks to create conditions that allow rural communities to develop their full potential in a sustainable and equitable manner, and how these actions can be applied to beekeeping development, relating them directly to the needs and opportunities of this sector.
In addition, Patricio Nayan spoke about the governance of the program Recovery and economic reactivation of the beekeeping industry for producers in the province of Palena and Llanquihue”.
