A photobook, a short film and a discussion were the activities carried out as part of the 60th anniversary of the Institute for Agricultural Development ( Indap) in Chile. The event was led by the Undersecretary of Agriculture, José Guajardo Reyes, and summarized the milestones of the institution’s work in the world of agriculture from its creation in 1962 to the present.
The launch of the photobook and the short film were also attended by the Deputy National Director of Indap, Pía Alfaro; Jacques Chonchol, who was Vice-President of Indap (1964-1969) and later Minister of Agriculture under President Salvador Allende; former directors of the institution, Arturo Sáez, Ricardo Halabí and Hernán Rojas; and representatives of FAO, Prodemu, Undersecretary of Cultural Heritage, agricultural services, Banco Estado and peasant organizations, among others.
During the discussion, topics on present and future challenges regarding sovereignty for food security were discussed with the participation of Indap’s national director, Santiago Rojas; the former national director of the institution, Octavio Sotomayor; the director of the Rimisp Chile Office, Rodrigo Yáñez; and the farmer from San Esteban (Los Andes Province, Valparaíso Region), Yanina Osorio.
Rodrigo Yáñez, Director of Rimisp Chile, together with Santiago Rojas, National Director of Indap.
Rodrigo Yáñez, Director of Rimisp’s Chile Office, commented that “the image of the peasant is very much associated with being isolated, with fire, with firewood”. He added that “a question that always appears when we are in the field, both in Chile and in Latin America, is about why peasants and indigenous people have to be resilient (…) And I believe that this question is very much associated with a kind of construction of sovereignty, security, stability. Up to what point do we have to stop transforming, changing, and we can build autonomous strategies that allow stability”.
Rodrigo Yáñez, Director of Rimisp Chile, together with Daniela Acuña, Head of the Sustainability and Climate Change Department at ODEPA.
For her part, farmer Yanina Osorio recounted her experience working with stall cattle: “Indap’s support has allowed me to get ahead, because life in the countryside is a constant battle, due to the drought, the high cost of inputs and the low pay for the work, which causes many people to migrate. The good thing is that now we have machines to reduce the workload and social networks to sell our products”.
