Every two years since 2011, Rimisp – Latin American Centre for Rural Development publishes its Latin American Report on Poverty and Inequality, as a contribution to the discussion on these issues from the particular perspective of territorial inequality, one of the least addressed aspects of the problem, and one that has a particularly strong impact on the rural sectors of Latin America.
This fifth edition, entitled Latin American Report on Poverty and Inequality 2019, Rural Youth and Territory, addresses the importance of young people in the development of Latin America, and the challenges that this group faces in their processes of economic and social inclusion.
Specifically, the Report notes the progress made by Mexico, El Salvador, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia and Chile in the fulfilment of the UN 2030 Agenda; it discusses the aspects that affect the growth of territories with the greatest difficulties; and highlights innovative experiences in the generation of opportunities for the young population.
Thus, the publication provides information on poverty, health, education, economic dynamism and employment, income, citizen security and gender equality in the Latin American region, and presents a specific analysis on youth and territorial inequality, through statistical information and six case studies.
Finally, the Report proposes that rural territories in the process of productive transformation, linked to medium or large urban centres, where there are relevant policies to support education and employment, and with active territorial coalitions, have a high potential to provide opportunities for young people.
